Solar PV Module Buyer's Guide 2023

For the 2023 PV Module Buyer’s Guide, we sent a questionnaire to every major solar panel manufacturer. This Guide is a snapshot of their global and U.S. capacity, what’s new this year, and their top product lines. Click products to expand for more information.

The solar module market is more competitive than ever in terms of pricing and power rating. So, what else should residential and commercial solar installers and procurement teams consider when selecting solar modules?

“With the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) expected to accelerate residential and C&I solar deployment, thanks to more certainty around the long-term extension of the Investment Tax Credit (ITC), demand for high-power and high-efficiency modules with long-term warranties will grow more competitive. What’s new? Since its founding 25 years ago, accumulative shipments of Trina Solar’s modules totaled 140 GW, while 210mm module shipments exceeded 65GW by Q1 2023, ranking first globally. As the first mover of 210mm modules, Trina recently put 210mm n-type capacity into mass production, reinforcing the company’s competitiveness with next-generation n-type cell technology. Trina’s newly upgraded n-type i-TOPCon modules with Vertex 210R (rectangle cells) n-type 605W and Vertex 210 (square cells) n-type 695W modules, with up to 22.4% efficiency. The company’s newest facility has already begun production of 210mm monocrystalline ingot and will have 20GW of planned capacity once fully operational. Trina’s 6.5GW wafer facility in Vietnam marks the milestone of a completely restructured and independent supply chain.

Paired with lower Voc allowing for more modules per string and more power per string, this further reduces the LCOE through reduced eBOS, less labor and overall less racking needed to reach your production targets.

Overview: Improving on the Vertex 210mm platform, the Vertex N utilizes TOPCon technology to have higher production, better efficiency and lower degradation resulting in a 3% increased energy yield per watt compared to PERC. This N-type technology allows for 1% first year degradation, 0.4% annual power attenuation and 80% bifaciality which further reduce LCOE while improving ROI.

What’s new? LONGi continues to be one of the world’s leading solar technology companies. The company has once again been ranked in the highest AAA category in the latest edition of the PV ModuleTech bankability ratings (Q1, 2023), marking its 13th consecutive AAA ranking and consolidating the company’s leading position among the world’s module manufacturers.

The Hi-MO 5 54-cell module brings the advanced, field-proven technology optimized for the 72-cell utility module to the DG sector. Features such as the M10 (182 mm) gallium-doped wafer, integrated segmented ribbons, and 9-busbar half-cut cell combine to produce excellent performance and reliability. The all-black module design also provides an aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Perfect for which application(s): Rooftop and other DG projects

The Hi-MO 5 54-cell bifacial module brings the advanced, field-proven technology optimized for the 72-cell bifacial module used in the utility space to the DG sector. Features such as the M10 (182 mm) gallium-doped wafer, integrated segmented ribbons, and 9-busbar half-cut bifacial cell combine to produce excellent performance. The glass-glass construction and extended warranty package ensure long-term reliability.

Perfect for which application(s): Utility and large-scale commercial ground-mount projects

The Hi-MO 5 72-cell bifacial module has been deployed on hundreds of utility solar plants worldwide, including gigawatts of sites in the US. Based on the M10 (182 mm) wafer size, this optimized large-format module incorporates dual-glass and frame packaging to ensure module strength. Smart module packaging solutions are used to achieve high reliability, low-cost transportation and logistics. Gallium-doped technology overcomes LID degradation and guarantees the long-term power generation of the module, while uniform smart soldering increases the power and efficiency of the module, improving the power load capacity. Additional power generation from the backside of the bifacial modules increases the overall energy yield. The Hi-MO 5 module family consistently rates among the top performers in independent testing by PVEL, RETC and other labs.

What’s new? In the past year, Panasonic released two new lines of all-black compact EVERVOLT solar modules. Developed with performance, accessibility, flexibility and pleasing aesthetics in mind, the 400W/390W HK Black Series modules provide eco-conscious homeowners with a greater range of solar options at a more accessible price point. Additionally, Panasonic released the Panasonic 370W/360WPK Black Series modules, both of which are Panasonic’s first panels made with Passivated Emitter and Rear Contact (PERC) technology. The sleek all-black modules are made with 60 half-cut cells and PERC technology, have module efficiency of 20.3 percent and 19.7 percent, respectively, and guarantee power output of at least 86 percent in the 25th year after installation.

Perfect for: High panel efficiency at high temperatures

The Panasonic 410/400W EverVolt HK Series panels produce more power over the long haul. These panels are made with heterojunction technology and gapless connections, and are comprised of 66 half-cut cells, which minimizes electron loss, maximizes conversion efficiency, and produces higher power output over conventional panels. The N-type cells result in minimal Low Induced degradation (LID) and Potential Induced degradation (PID), to support reliability and longevity. They have superior efficiency ratings of 22.2% and 21.6%, allowing maximum power production with less roof space. 410/400W EverVolt HK Series panels produce more energy throughout the day even on the hottest days and warmest climates to outperform others due to an industry-leading 0.26%/°C temperature coefficient. The modules produce power in shaded areas for greater energy yields and output; Panasonic guarantees power output of at least 92 percent in the 25th year after installation. More sunlight absorption means more clean power to the home.

What’s new? Founded in 2013 in Vietnam, Boviet Solar is part of Boway Alloy and a global Tier 1 solar technology company that specializes in the manufacturing of Monocrystalline PERC cells, Gamma Series Monofacial and Vega Series Bifacial PV modules, as well as solar project development. What’s new? Qcells is investing more than $2.5 billion to build a complete solar supply chain in the United States. The company’s commitment to the clean energy economy in America will create nearly 2,500 direct jobs in Georgia. The announcement marks the largest investment in the history of American solar and sets Qcells up as the only company in the U.S. to establish a fully-integrated, silicon-based solar supply chain from raw material to finished panel.

Perfect for: Residential With a higher efficiency rate than previous series, the Q.PEAK DUO BLK ML-G10+ is the first 400W module for the residential market and takes high performance to a new level. The G10+ module utilizes Q CELLS’ zero gap Q.ANTUM DUO Z technology to boost module efficiency up to 20.6%.. Q.TRON BLK M-G2+ is Qcells’ highly efficient N-type solar module based on Q.ANTUM NEO Technology. Within Q.ANTUM NEO solar cells (N-type), passivation layer and electrical interconnection functionality are integrated in the NEO Power Transmitter layer. This allows for a full area passivation and full area contact at the same time thus overcoming the PERC limitations. Thanks to its high efficiency up to 22.0 % and user-friendly mounting options available this module is an excellent solution for residential roof top projects.

Perfect for: C&I and Utility The high-performance module Q.PEAK DUO XL-G11S / BFG is an ideal solution for commercial and utility applications, benefiting from an extra bifacial energy yield gain of up to 20%. Thanks to its Q.ANTUM DUO bifacial technology and cutting-edge cell interconnection, this 1500 V UL/IEC solar module ensures superior yields with a power output up to 595W, while maintaining a very low LCOE.

The EAGLE Continental module includes JinkoSolar’s Diamond cells. These uniquely designed cells feature high-efficiency mono PERC technology and enable module power up to 400W. As with all of JinkoSolar’s modules, the EAGLE Continental is Fire Type 1 rated, engineered with a thick frame, 3.2mm front side glass, and thick backsheet for added durability. It is also certified for high snow and wind loads (45mm Hailstones at 29m/s).

The EAGLE G4 modules utilize high efficiency cells and our tiling ribbon (TR) technology, which eliminates horizontal cell gaps and increases power density. The all-black construction creates a high-power solution with premium aesthetics, making it ideal for residential applications.

The EAGLE G4b modules utilize bifacial cells and our TR technology. By minimizing white space between cells, we enable module power up to 465W. What’s new? In March, 2023, Silfab Solar announced a second investment round by ARC Financial Corp. to help fund the next expansion of made in America technology to include 1 GW cell production and over 1 gigawatt of solar module production within an additional location in the USA.

Perfect for: Rooftops

At 210 x 210 mm, the G12 wafers and cells in the REC Alpha Pure-R are larger, providing higher power output. By arranging the 80 half-cut HJT cells in a gapless design, it is possible to maximize the power-generating area of the module. Advanced cell interconnection technology improves current flow and eliminates invasive soldering processes, contributing to high efficiency and long-term performance. The four-section junction box divides the module into four strings, reducing the size of the sections that shut down when shaded. This allows the module to generate more energy even when partially shaded. The low temperature coefficient also causes the solar module to operate efficiently even on hotter days, generating more energy for homes. With the rapid growth of the solar industry, solar modules and their manufacturing need to become even more sustainable. The REC N-Peak 3 Black Series for the US rooftop market is the third generation of REC’s n-type TOPCon cell-based solar panels. What’s new? Last October, Mission Solar announced plans to expand capacity to reach 1 GW annually in 2024. These plans are underway, including the construction of a 200,000SF storage facility. Expansion of the Mission Solar facility began in Q4 2022. The increase in capacity is directly related to the company’s sourcing strategy. OCI Company Ltd., the module manufacturer’s parent company in Seoul, South Korea, will play a vital role providing polysilicon for Mission modules.
